When and Why should a Small Business have SEO?
The first question would be; Do you want to have more business / customers / enquiries? If you answer is yes then your business should have an SEO strategy.
To put this in simple terms, people use search engines every day to search for products and services, if you business is not on page 1, and you are in a position to take on more business, then you need to get to page 1, preferably somewhere toward the top. If your business website is not located on page 1, then you will not be attracting customers who are searching.
How do you increase a websites ranking?
The rule of thumb is; relevance. If your website contains unique content relevant to a particular search term, then it will have a lot more chance to rank higher.
On Page Optimisation
On page content plays a big role in relevance, to give you an example; lets look at a concrete business, a business owner decides he needs a website, and decides to built it himself to save a little cash. He starts to write a little blur in the services area about “We provide concrete services in Sydney” and “Where are the best in town”. If he fails to focus on outlining his services in detail, e.g Driveways, Ready to mix concrete, Delivery, Concrete Pumping. He will not rank well for these services. If he does not elaborate and write in detail about his services, he will have poor ranking. So this is why it is important to have a plan when you start to think about building a website or revamping your site to have good content for SEO purposes. Start with a blank sheet and outline your services in detail, do not just talk about how great you are but focus on key points that influence people during the research process, like including warranty, years of experience, your latest projects you have worked on etc…
Off Page Optimisation
Another factor which contributes to your website ranking well are things like back links. This not only has a positive influence on your ranking but can also divert traffic to your website, which in tern could help you generate more business. So once your on page content is done and you website is live, consider submitting it to local directories. Also if you have friends who also have a website, ask them to have a link to your website on theirs.
On a more technical level, you may want to consider spending an hour a day finding sites where you can submit your website to.
Also consider building a blog on your website, if users find your content / blog page is a good read or contains good information they may link to it, which again is a bonus for you.
